As attention turns to Capita following their profit warning on Wednesday, new Tussell data reveals that it has the broadest public sector customer base of any government supplier.
Since January 2015, Capita has won awards or frameworks from 292 distinct public sector buyers – more buyers than any other supplier.
Whilst indicating that the government would be hard hit by trouble at the firm, this also shows a more diversified book of business than other outsourcers such as Carillion. Capita’s public sector work is less reliant on a small number of customers.
Unlike outsourcers operating primarily in the Construction sector, Capita’s work is spread across a large number of small value contracts. This makes it less exposed to the risk of big projects going sour.
Since January 2015, Capita has won 574 awards with a total value of £534M. Less than 10% of these were worth £1M or more.
The reach of Capita’s live contracts right across the public sector underlines the importance of the job that bosses now face in steadying the company. However, ultimately, the company’s diversity may well be a source of strength.
