The public sector telecoms market is dominated by a few big players, with the top suppliers being awarded 78% of the total value of contracts awarded in 2018
A total of 587 contracts were awarded in the telecoms sector in 2018 with a total value of £1.2bn. However, over half of this value came from just five contracts. The largest telecoms contract was a £380m, seven year renewal of a PFI contract by TfL to Thales for connect radio and transmission services on the London Underground.
Transport for London was the biggest buyer in the telecoms sector, awarding over £412m across four different contracts. With the telecoms sector dominated by several large value contracts, smaller suppliers may be best positioned to find opportunities through sub-contracting.
